The construction crew bought Landon’s fabricated explanation with no questions asked. Frankly, they didn’t care why the center of the room had been cleared away except for an odd circular patch of carpet glued to the floorboards. They simply wanted to get the Eureka Room’s portrait of Mother Nature and inner vault reinstalled so they could get started on the day’s big project, the installation of the first ever in-pond trampoline.

As soon as the workers headed out to the pond, Landon spoke the magic phrase, “heart of sand,” to check the contents of the secret vault. He quickly slipped behind the fireplace and found everything in place. He remained much more concerned about the flying carpet incident so returned to sit and study the odd patch of rug.

Olana stuck her head in the doorway and said, “Our soccer girl is back, and lunch is ready. Should we eat or wait for the travelers?”

“I’ve lost my appetite –”

“Landon… not hungry?” Marnie questioned, poking her head in, too. She looked at all the scattered furniture and said, “Oh boy, what did I miss?”

“We thought it would be helpful to clear out the furniture,” Landon said, quite confidently. “Then, we discovered this strange cutout, and the rug flew downstairs and managed to turn the doorknob and fly away.”

“Good luck selling that one,” Marnie said, crossing her arms. “Tell me what really happened, and I might help you out.”

“Okay, here’s the story,” Landon said through pinched lips.

As Landon recapped the play-by-play, Marnie listened intently. She pondered for a moment and then gave her opinion. “First, we definitely need to tell Oscar with Mirabella still in the room,” she said.

“Hopefully he won’t get all huffy in front of royalty,” Landon said in agreement.

“You also need to cover up those bruises before Ozilline gets home and whips out her extensive first aid kit,” Marnie said. “Lastly, I don’t know what to say about this weird circular piece of the carpet. Have you tried moving it?”

Landon cocked his head back in utter disgust and said, “I’m not an idiot.”

“And you’re sure it won’t move?”

“Listen, inspector Marnie, if…”

“We’re home – the journey is finally complete!” Oscar yelled from downstairs.

“You two get the story straight, and I’ll get all three of them up here,” Olana said, before dashing out of the room.

Landon returned to his pacing and said, “Go along with whatever I end up saying, okay?”

Marnie shrugged her shoulders and sprawled out in the chaise lounge.

As soon as the others walked in, Landon took a deep breath and started to say, “I can explain all of…”

“Would you look at that… how unfortunate!” Miss Spring bellowed. “Alfonzo and I wanted this to be perfection, but it obviously turned into a mess.” She walked toward the carpet circle and said to Landon, “Of all the days to discover two dead dreaming trees.”

By the stunned look on Landon’s face, Mirabella realized that the worst was yet to be discovered. She smiled and calmly said, “Everyone, please take a seat.”

Marnie agreed to
